One of the worst forms of Mental Abuse is Gaslighting and you won’t even be aware of it
Every individual is unique and so are you. There are many in your life or even your partner who may belittle your efforts and try to manipulate you through ways you can’t well imagine to fill you with insecurity. I’m speaking about mental abuse which several people especially women suffer in silence around the world. However one particular form of mental abuse is so dangerous that you may not even know you have been subjected to it.
Gaslighting as the term is called gets its notorious name from a play in 1938 called ‘Gaslight’. Through sinister means of convincing and planting the seeds of doubt, one can easily manipulate another into believing she is going mad. How many women can identify with such a condition having gone through the same thing?
1 Mental abuse named after a play
Gaslight a play by Patrick Hamilton in 1938 was made into a movie in 1944. The story revolves around a couple where a man tries to manipulate his young wife’s mind convincing her through carefully staged experiences and incidents that she is going insane. Through subtle changes in their living environment such as dimming of a gas light, he sows the seeds of doubt within her denying her claims when she points out such changes. He remarks that it is her imagination and nothing is wrong even as he dims the Gaslight every day.
This form of mental abuse took on the name gaslighting through which doubt is planted into one’s mind about incidents, environmental changes and people creating real phenomena and then denying them and attributing such as a figment of the victim’s imagination.
