Research develops Brain Scans to diagnose babies who may be at risk of contracting Autism
In 2014, The CDC or center for disease control and prevention declared that Autism spectrum disorder affects 1% of the world’s total population. That’s a huge amount where in the USA that figure stands at 1 in 45.ASD appears and is noticed when a child is approximately 2 years old. However if a diagnosis can be made when the child is younger, it could help both child and parents manage the disease better.
Research on the disease has now found that using brain scans to diagnose autism disorders can well identify the disease in the very first year of a child’s life.
1 New research on autism reveals positive factors for preventive measures
In a research study published in Nature, 106 babies were tested through brain scans. The children were chosen from families who already had an autistic child. The scans taken at 6 months and 1 year of age identified markers in the brain which predicted whether the child will sugffer from ASD or not.
Research Doctor Joseph Piven stated “Our study shows that early brain development biomarkers could be very useful in identifying babies at the highest risk for autism before behavioral symptoms emerge,”
Currently a diagnosis of Autistic disorder is made only when a child is 2 or 3 years old. But now in babies with autistic siblings, the brain imaging approach can now predict in the very first year whether the child may be prone to suffer from ASD when older.
