Story of David Reimer: The boy who was raised as a girl for gender experiment
3 The effects of the experiment
At 18 months, David was castrated and a rudimentary vulva was created for him. The doctors hid the information from both David and his brother Brian and advised the parents to treat David as a girl. The family started raising David as Brenda, but the process was not going smoothly. She rejected girl toys and as she grew, she started becoming more masculine and found herself identifying as a man, which she was.
Dr. Money had given this experiment the name of nurture v nature and he started publishing Brenda’s case in his books. The books sold like hot property, but on the other side, Reimer family was facing a huge problem, as Brenda had rejected her identity as a female and was picking fights with other children and was getting lonely by second.
She was bullied in the school and was barred from using the girl’s bathroom by other girls. When she turned 9, the psychologist at the John Hopkins Hospital suggested that the process should be completed by turning David into Brenda for real. But she resisted the change and threatened to kill herself.
